The fuel price is rocketing up and the Nation is burning because of the fuel Crisis. Who is to blame,” This is the talk of the Nation today right from Neta ki Nara to Janata Ki pyara.
The autowallahs
talk about it, the truck guy carrying mangoes talk about it, the common man in the train talks about it.
What do they talk ?
They all do one thing in common-play the blame game and keep talking for some more time till the heat settles down.Add to that Indefinite strike by Taxis in Kolkata ,auto drivers staging demos in Kerala and Protests by left Parties.
Are we all equally not responsible for a National treasure-Fuel which not only moves India but the whole world?
How many of us have analysed where it is all going wrong.
Some startling Facts first
Worldwide Vs India &nb
sp; 1993 1995 Jun 1996 % Hike
The Price of Crude oil/Barrel 25$ 60$ &n
bsp; 75 $ 200
Price of Petrol/litre India avg 35/- &
nbsp; 43/- 48/-
40
Energy consumption: 2.6 mbd- 2004 to 5.2 mbd - 2030 (India)
&
nbsp; 82.1 mbd -2004 to 115.4 mbd 2030. (Global)
This clearly indicates that this is only the beginning of steep rocketing of Fuel and worse is yet to come. Gone are the days when your life depended on your Home and your office and will our lives move further without fuel.
Come to think of it, the need for every Indian is to control and conserve for a better tomorrow for our children.
The Players who should Control-The Central and State Government, The Oil making companies, and the Petrol bunks form the players-the first being a regulating body which incidentally is the Tax earner, the other two operating for profits.
The Central Government controls the price of fuel. But what it does better is by garnering 44% of its revenues from Customs and excise duties on Fuel.
The State Governments levy taxes ranging from 25-35 % of sales tax on fuel which is exorbitantly high compared to other products.
In net effect-Actual Price of Petrol Rs 20.00 per Litre + Customs duties Rs 3.50 Excise Rs 13.00 Sales Tax Rs 6.00 + Bunk Commission Rs 6.00=48.50 to user.
When will we understand this trivial factor that Indirect tax regime will kill the economy. All the Governments at Centre and State practise populist tactics trying to show cuts in taxes on direct products and in turn are escalating the prices by levying such high taxes on the most important product –Fuel
The Fuel not only moves the world but makes essential commodities reach from place of produce to every home of people and any hike will only cause escalation in everything we eat to everything we use.
When I asked one of the Petrol bunk owners (who started recently in my area and is doing roaring Business) as to why he chose this field, he says he spent 25 lacs to the Oil company guys and he is earning as much every month-quite a startling revelation. The Oil companies are also playing the Game theory by stocking up for future supplies at higher prices
The Government has to cut these taxes by half. On June 30th, eight state Governments came forward and reduced taxes by 5% which is not enough.
Mr Murali Deora ,” Are you listening. The Pipe line Project from Iran can wait because your big brother Pakistan has to approve it. It is time to control by cutting taxes.
Conserve- Every Indian should act today
From above, you can see our consumption doubling in the next 20 years compared to 1.4 times worldwide. But where is the fuel
When the tap at home dries out, won’t we conserve, the same applies here. Conservation starts from home. When we Indians have become more and more recognised by the world for talking, why don’t we use half that energy for walking because it is good for burning calories and not burning another energy which is combustible.
In my apartment, there are people who take their car out for dropping their kid at School some 300 metres from Home. My kids’ School being 7 kms away, I prefer the School bus because I save 1000 rupees of fuel every month.
What to say the likes of Ambani familes using 50 cars and the Bachchan family using a dozen cars.
Transport-for the Public
The need for improving Public transport system has not been realized by the metros of this Country for so long. Mumbai and Chennai are two examples of good Public Transport system. My city Hyderabad is the worst of all and hence has more bikes than any of the Cities in India. The result , more fuel burns here.
We should learn from the Transport systems in Newyork, Chicago, Japan and Germany which cuts their fuel consumption by nearly half.
We are also not paying heed to improving Infrastructure by widening Roads which is the essence of fuel conservation because we spend half the fuel in traffic snarls.
Loan Mela aur Petrol koya
The more and more companies coming forward with loans for Vehicles for as low an upfront payment of Rs 1000/- is leading to the maddening crowd running for buying them which has resulted in steep increase in two wheelers and Four wheelers in India. China has put strict legislation on two wheelers on road which has made them fuel their economy to the safer side.
Alternate sources of Energy is not plenty to reduce fuel use at the rate we are today and we need to conserve every drop of Gold-Black Gold.
